Romania’s national airport company (Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest) says it has set fixed prices for taxis taking travelers from the capital’s main airport, in a bid to give visitors a positive first impression of Romania.

The Bucharest National Airport Company says that authorized taxis will charge a maximum of 1.4 lei (35 cents) a kilometer (0.6 miles) at the Henri Coanda Airport starting from midnight Wednesday.

Customers will be able to order taxis inside the terminal from a machine or catch a cab outside. A fare into Bucharest will now cost about 35 lei ($8.75).

Stories of cab drivers charging exorbitant fares to tourists were rife until a few years ago, when airport authorities took steps to regulate taxi companies allowed at the airport.

The airport says there are currently 1,400 authorized taxis.
